Performance arts festivals are a cultural staple in many towns, cities and countries around the world. They provide an illuminating snapshot of a community’s identity as well as being an important driver for economic prosperity.
Performance arts festivals typically showcase both contemporary and traditional forms of art such as dance, music, theater and other creative expressions. Furthermore, they serve as a platform for intercultural dialogue and promote deeper understanding through shared experience.
In 1968, artist Brooks Kelly and eight friends from Pembroke, Massachusetts began organizing a festival to bring art to their community. Their goal was to showcase fine arts in an approachable way that appealed to everyone – both young and old alike.
This was to be the inaugural Pembroke Arts Festival, with four area businessmen contributing seed money as organizers.
Since its founding, the Festival has grown in size and recognition, becoming a major economic driver for Pembroke. It draws over 85,000 attendees annually and is supported by private donations, an enthusiastic volunteer Board of Directors, as well as local businesses.
Urban festival organizers recognize that the physical materiality of a neighborhood plays an integral role in its distinct social history (Waitt, 2008; Quinn, 2005b). By altering the environment through spatial transformation, they strive to preserve this heritage and foster a sense of identity for residents.
